The Tube:

The "Tube" is made with PVC pipe like that shown in the picture at right. It is available at most hardware stores; however, the mere 6 to 8 inches needed to make a "Tube" can usually be found as scrap at most construction sites. Picture of PVC Tubes

Once you have the PVC pipe cut to 6 to 8 inches long, attach a handle to it as shown in the graphic at left. You are now ready to use the tube to teach your dog to take treats gently.

Hold the tube in one hand by the handle and a treat in the other hand.  Insert the hand holding the treat into the tube until the treat shows at the other end of the tube (see graphic at right.)  Now, offer the treat to the dog.  If the dog Picture of The Tube with treat in proper position
does not take the treat gently, pull your hand back into the tube some (like a turtle pulling its head back into its shell), so the dog has to insert its nose into the tube slightly to take the treat. Most dogs will be somewhat suspicious of the tube and will take the treat more gingerly out of caution.

Still another alternative for training your dog to take treats gently can be found here: VENT BRUSH.
